Why Ignition Switches Fail — and What It Means for Your Vehicle
Ignition cylinders are mechanical components with a finite lifespan. Every time a key is inserted and turned, small metal wafers inside the cylinder flex and reset. Over years of use — especially when a key ring is heavy and pulling down on the cylinder while driving — those wafers wear unevenly. The result is a key that jiggles in place, refuses to turn to the 'Start' position, or worse, won't come out at all. Cold New Jersey winters can accelerate this wear, as temperature swings cause metal to contract and expand, tightening tolerances inside an already-fatigued cylinder.
A worn ignition switch can also create electrical problems beyond the purely mechanical. In many modern vehicles, the ignition cylinder is linked to a transponder reader and steering column lock — so a failure in one component can cascade into a no-start condition that looks electrical but is actually mechanical at its root.
